Beef & Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes

Mashed Potatoes

You’ll need

  • 2 lbs potatoes (Yukon Gold = creamy, Russet = fluffy)
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ½–¾ cup milk or cream
  • Salt & pepper

How

  1. Peel (or don’t), chunk, and boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender.
  2. Drain well.
  3. Mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Taste. Add more butter if your soul asks for it.

Beef & Gravy

You’ll need

  • 1 lb beef (stew meat, chuck, or ground beef all work)
  • Salt & pepper
  • 1 tbsp oil or butter
  • 1 small onion, diced (optional but recommended)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp flour or cornstarch slurry
  • Optional upgrades: garlic, mushrooms, thyme

How

  1. Brown the beef
    Season beef with salt & pepper. Brown in oil over medium-high heat until nicely colored.
  2. Build flavor
    Add onion (and mushrooms if using). Cook until soft. Toss in garlic if you’re doing that.
  3. Gravy time
    Sprinkle flour over everything, stir for 1 minute.
    Slowly pour in broth while stirring. Add Worcestershire.
  4. Simmer
    Let it bubble gently until thick and glossy (5–10 minutes). Taste and adjust seasoning.

Serve

  • Spoon mashed potatoes into a bowl
  • Smother with beef and gravy
  • Black pepper on top like you mean it

Lazy / Extra-Cozy Variations

  • Crockpot version: stew beef + gravy all day, mash potatoes at the end
  • Ground beef shortcut: faster, still delicious
  • Add peas or carrots: classic diner energy
  • Instant mash acceptable: no judgment here
